I completely agree that Proposition 8 is stupid, only to be exceeded by the attempt to use the courts to re-define marriage. Can I get a court to re-define my children to be part of a minority group so that they have a better shot at college? Can I get a court to re-define me as a former centerfielder for the New York Yankees, so I can sign autographs for adoring fans? If it's rights they want, fine, go fight for your rights. Just don't go redefining everyone else so that you can be more comfortable with who you are. If you think it is cool to be tall, doesn't mean you can just get a court to say you are, and at the same time re-define all tall people as short.

>Marriage and the laws that eventually gave it protection and encouraged it
>were for the purpose of bringing children into the world.

"Marriage" maybe have evolved as a societal protection. But not the laws.

The "laws" about licensing "marriage" came about to prevent white women from marrying black men. These laws, as the "saturday night special" gun laws, were racist in original and intent.

Further, the politicians, seeking to justify their income tax, put in tax preferences for "married couples". That made it imperative for them to legislate and administrate the "marriage contract".

I'd assert that the government (gooferment) has absolutely ZERO role in the whole subject of marriage. Given the illegitamacy rate. Given the cohabitation rate. Given the "immorality" of our current society. Given the smuttiness of leaders (i.e., marital infidelity). I'd say that the gooferment should keep its nose out of moral issues.

IMHO, Proposition 8 is an unwarranted intrusion into matters that are no concern of the government.
