“While Washington has been absorbed in this debate about deficits, people across the country are asking what can we do to help the father looking for work,” Obama said. “That’s part of the reason that people are so frustrated with what’s been going on in this town. … Our economy didn’t need Washington to come along with a manufactured crisis to make things worse.” — President Barack Obama, August 2011

President Obama likes to look to history, going as far back as 2008, to explain ad nauseam the mess he was handed. So let’s take a longer look at his performance among American Presidents.

“Whether it’s retail sales, manufacturing, all of the indicators show that we are in the worst recession since the Great Depression,” Obama said on ABC. The result is that all Americans will feel the effects of efforts to put the economy back on track, he said. — January 2009

Is that true? According to the National Bureau of Economic Research’s Business Cycle Dating Committee, the recession that began in December 2007 was long compared to what we have been used to. It lasted, and I say lasted because it officially ended two years ago, eighteen months. The prior two recessions were less than half of that. Looking at history, between 1865 and 1885, there were three recessions that lasted more than 32 months and since 1854 there have been twelve recessions that have been as long as the “Great Recession.” Is it that President Obama’s leadership just makes it feel longer and more painful?

But what about job growth? Let’s look at the performance of presidents since 1890, which time includes seven recessions that were at least as long as the “Great Recession.” Looking at it in terms of the percentage change in job creation, and focusing on their first two and a half years in office to be comparable with President Obama’s tenure, who were the five worst presidents and how do they stack up?

Herbert Hoover – no surprise here. His first two and a half years were at the beginning of the Great Depression

Barack Obama – the only other president during this time with negative job growth. ObamaCare, TARP, bailouts, stimulus, massive regulation, Dodd-Frank…do you see any connection here?

Grover Cleveland

Woodrow Wilson – who many credit with starting the progressive ball rolling: income tax, creation of the federal reserve, direct election of US Senators

Dwight Eisenhower

The progressives are sure to shoot back as they always do with “imagine how much worse it would have been, etc., etc….” Consider this. Government spending has increased by 3.1% of GDP under President Obama. In 1900, federal government spending in total was only 3.1% of GDP. We have no job growth and President Obama is lost in the midst of all the clues history holds for him. If only he would open his eyes to the truth and close them on his failed ideology.

That’s my opinion; I’d like to know yours. Please comment below.

A hat tip to Kevin A. Hassett’s piece in National Review, “One for the History Books,” August 15, 2011

I guess that getting a tingle running up his leg only lasted so long before he had to give himself another fix. Since talking about all the successes of the current administration seemed like a hard sell, Mr. Matthews put together a hit piece on the Tea Parties and the right, or as he calls it, the “New Right.”

On his Hardball program, Matthews “documentary” was titled “The Rise of the New Right.” In it he tries to paint the Tea Party movement as a fringe group of racists, gun nuts, and generally a group waiting for a reason to break into violence.

You would be hard pressed to find a more over the top cheerleader for Barack Obama than Chris Matthews. Matthews took advantage of his position in the media to actively work to get Obama elected, and now he is crestfallen that General Electric, CBS, and Disney/ABC do not control the news like in the good old days. He openly attacks Fox News and blames the Internet for allowing the Tea Party to do an end run around the main stream media and get their information out. Matthews, like big government, is smarter than you. He knows what “news” you need to hear, and will diligently work to keep what you don’t need to know from reaching your eyes and ears.

The Tea Party that I know has some very basic principles:

Fiscal responsibility

Accountability

Transparency

Free market solutions

Pretty radical stuff, eh? In a Rasmussen poll taken earlier this month, 46% of voters say the Tea Party is good for America, while 31% disagree. Matthews doesn’t tell you this and he makes sure his “documentary” doesn’t provide the information that would let you draw that conclusion.

He reports on the militia movement and specifically mentions the Hutaree militia that plotted to kill a policeman and then those who would attend his funeral. While constantly tying the Tea Party, and the militia to the Republicans he doesn’t mention that the one person in the Hutaree militia whose political affiliation is known was a Democrat and he voted as such. Not that there is any linkage between what party one belongs to and being a nut-case, but a fair reporter might mention that to give an honest representation of the story.

Matthews also makes several references to violence against Democrats after the health care vote. He neglects to say that only one case of violence resulted in an arrest. That was for an attack against Republican Eric Cantor’s office. Any one can get a brick and write a note on it quoting one of the Founding Fathers, but until to catch who did it and find out who they really are, you don’t know if it is an extremist on the right, or a Saul Alinsky disciple on the left who wants to discredit the Tea Party people.

Matthews liberally, no pun intended, sprinkles through his story extremists on the right, going back to the 1930s, such as Father Coughlin, but nowhere does he mention extremists on the left. There is no profile of Louis Farrakhan, Reverend Wright, the Democrats who fought against the Civil Rights Act, while a majority of Republicans supported it. There is no mention of our government internment of thousands of American citizens of Japanese descent during World War II.

It’s getting closer to the mid-term elections and Matthews doesn’t like seeing everything he has bet his reputation on going down in flames. So he takes out this “hail Mary” pass to try to turn the tide against the Tea Party and scare people into staying safe with the Democrats. But this time, the main stream media is not in control. They can’t craft the message and force feed it to the American public. Broadcast news and many major newspapers are losing viewers and readership daily, because Toto has pulled the curtain back on the Great and Powerful Oz that was the main stream media and exposed it for what it is, a shill for the Progressive left.

There comes a time when you have to realize saving face is not worth putting your countrymen at risk. After the terror attack on Foot Hood, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said:

“The system has worked really very, very smoothly over the course of the past several days,” Janet Napolitano, the Homeland Security secretary said, in an interview on “This Week” on ABC. Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman, used nearly the same language on “Face the Nation” on CBS, saying that “in many ways, this system has worked.”

Later, both Napolitano and Gibbs had to “amend” those statements. After a botched terror attack in New York City, Secretary Napolitano was quick to conclude it was a “one-off”. No problem folks, it’s all clear. Later in the day reports were that officials were increasingly seeing international links to the bombing.

What is it with Napolitano and her rush to sound the “all clear”? Wouldn’t it be prudent to let the investigation lead where it is going to lead? The last place we need such superficiality is at the Department of Homeland Security. President Obama should replace her before her next goof leads to serious damage to the country.

I am sure you all recall the video played ad nauseum starring the Reverend Wright railing against America defending itself. It now seems to accurately describe the results of the new hope and change administration. After his worldwide apology tour, and banning the term “War on Terror,” replacing it with the limp “Overseas Contingency Operation,” so that, like his presidential campaign, no one would know what he actually meant or stood for, his own chickens are coming home to roost.

Actions Have Consequences

The left used to attack the Bush administration’s approach because being tough on terrorists only served to aid them in their recruiting. Maybe so, but I am less concerned about lines of recruits in Afghanistan than crazed terrorists in New York. Obama’s apology tour shows his weakness and as the terrorist mindset abhors weakness, it encourages attacks. So what would you prefer, attacks on American soil, or an uptick in recruiting on the other side of the world?

War vs. Law and Order

Bush recognized the War on Terror for what it was, a direct attack on the United States and our way of life. In a war, you go after the enemy, you don’t wait for him to come to you. You take prisoners and hold them, until the conflict is over. You dismantle their ability to wage war. It is aggressive and proactive. It is the way America has prevailed in wartime.

The Obama approach is Law an Order. Each act is seen as separate an isolated and as a crime to be investigated and prosecuted after the fact. First responders are more important than the first wave of Marines. To quote today’s Wall Street Journal:

Brian Jenkins, who studies terrorism for the Rand Corporation, says there were more terror incidents (12), including thwarted plots, on U.S. soil in 2009 than in any year since 2001. The jihadists don’t seem to like Americans any better because we’re closing down Guantanamo.

But the Obama Administration is currently considering releasing prisoners held in Guantanamo to Yemen. How long do you think it will be before they are back on the front lines trying to kill us?

Add to the mix the Obama administration’s, or should I say Eric Holder’s, decision to try the 9/11 terrorists in a civilian court. Holder’s testimony before Congress justifying his decision was painful to watch how he had no credible justification. Don’t forget to give Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, his Miranda rights and get him a good lawyer. Let’s pretend his claims to be associated with al Qaeda is just tough talk and braggadocio.

The reality is that whenever America fought a war and politicians pulled punches (e.g., Viet Nam) we lost.

Things are Working Swell

Janet Napolitano, Obama’s head of Homeland Security had this to say, according to the New York Times

How chilling is that? What exactly does she mean by the system worked? She refers to the number of organizations that were alerted after the fact. How about notifications before the fact? How about listening to the terrorist’s own father who reported him to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria. How about denying him a visa? Or is Napolitano too busy adding funeral homes to her list of organizations to notify after the fact?

Where’s Obama?

If there’s a chance Chicago might get the Olympics, don’t worry, Obama’s on a plane to give it the old presidential push! If there’s a Nobel Prize to pick up, Obama is your man! If there is a terrorist attack on our country, hey, don’t bother me I’m on vacation in Hawaii.

Some pundits on the news pointed out that President Bush didn’t speak out against the shoe bomber, Richard Reid, for several days, so cut Obama some slack. The problem is that no one doubted for a minute that Bush was engaged in the War on Terror, some even saying he was obsessed. Well that obsession kept us safe for seven years. In less than one year we have had Fort Hood and now this airline bombing.

Furthermore, why is Eric Holder making such a monumental decision regarding trying the 9/11 terrorists in New York? Why isn’t this Obama’s decision? Just like so much in this administration, Obama campaigns and gives speeches, and Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Eric Holder make policy decisions on their own.

Here’s to the Heroes

The heroes in this case were a Dutch citizen and the flight attendants, who subdued the terrorist and extinguished the fire. To quote again from the Wall Street Journal:

The lesson here is the same as Flight 93 on 9/11 and shoe-bomber Richard Reid, which is that civilians willing to act in their own self-defense are a crucial part of “homeland security.”

May I suggest that the statists drop their efforts to weaken the 2ndAmendment? As part of “homeland security” we may need to bear arms like at no time since the Civil War.

The Obama Administration probably wishes they didn’t spend $18 million to build a website that is making a mockery of their vaunted stimulus package that if not passed might result in an economic calamity from which we might never recover. Well, here is a random sampling of six beneficiaries of stimulus money:

Maine — Fish River Rural Health: $491,222. Jobs created — zero

New Jersey — Southern Regional High School Board of Education: $119,622. Jobs created — zero

Michigan — West Branch Rose City Area School District: $879,258. Jobs created — zero

Georgia — Georgia Crisis Family Center: $16,425. Jobs created — zero

Minnesota — Regents of the University of Minnesota: $294,200. Jobs created — zero

Texas — Port Aransas Independent School District: $143,241. Jobs created — zero

Enough already, I think you get the picture. Lest you think my sampling was biased you can play along. Go to the website, pick a dot at random and see for yourself. The media seem to be starting to wake up and do their job. ABC News reported on data from non-existent Congressional Districts. The New York Times reported on a $1,000 grant that created 50 jobs and upon further investigation found out the $1,000 went to purchase a lawn mower. But don’t worry, President Obama put that pit bull Joe Biden in charge of making sure the money was spent carefully. President Obama: \”Nobody Messes with Joe\” Joe Biden, call your office.

We are on an express train to financial ruin. This is not just a financial problem but a national security problem as well. We won the Cold War, not with weapons, but with our economy. President Reagan ramped up our military and the teetering Soviet economy could not keep up and communism collapsed. China is becoming more capitalist every day as we chase the ghost of Karl Marx. I ask a simple question, “Do you trust this administration to spend your tax dollars wisely?” Do you believe any administration, Republican, Democrat, Independent, can effectively manage the federal government as it exists today?

A phrase we often heard in the midst of the financial crisis as justification for bailouts was “too big to fail.” One response to that was “make them smaller.” If the federal government is too big to manage and is growing without bound, then we, who are the government of the people, must make the government smaller. It is a fundamental truth of government that programs once started do not end, they just find other things to do. Here is a case in point.

When I worked for one of the phone company spin offs after the break up of AT&T, I came across a regulatory agency called the Rural Electrification Administration. Strange I thought, most of America has electricity, and I am not working for the electric company. It turns out, that agency was created to help bring electricity to rural America. Okay, that sounds like a good idea. However, once its mission was completed, instead of going out of business, it found a new mission: bringing phone service to rural America, and it will go on and on. One of the key problems is how the mission is defined. In this example, as long as one farm doesn’t have electricity, the agency will still have a reason to exist. As long as a log cabin in the woods doesn’t have a phone land line, the agency must soldier on. As any economist will tell you, the cost of serving each additional rural property, will eventually skyrocket.

If we were to take these functions and drive them down to the state and local level, eventually someone will stand up and say, “We’re done, it’s not worth the increase in taxes to prolong the life of this agency.” But ensconced in Washington, it costs more to fight it than let it go on. But we have reached a tipping point where if we don’t cut the beast down to size, the beast will have us for dinner. Chinese anyone?

If I asked you a simple question, what government organization works well, what would you say? Let’s take a look at two government organizations and compare their effectiveness and motivation.

The Military

Whether you support our troops on the battlefield or want them to always stay home in their barracks, most Americans will say the military does a pretty good job. Why? That is, why are they effective, not just why do people think so? Well, they put a lot of investment in training and technology. They seem to have solved the problem of integration, being based on merit rather than racial prejudice. These are all important things, but I don’ t they get to the core of the issue. The key question is, what happens if they don’t do their job? They die…they die, the guy beside them dies, their buddies die, and depending on the size of the conflict, their families and country may eventually die. With that kind of motivation, race is not even secondary. If the guy next to me has got my back and I have his, I don’t care what color he or she is. We do it right, we live; we don’t, we die.

The K-12 Teacher

K-12 education comes under fire in this country, and rightly so, for failing to produce an educated workforce. In New York, for example we spend over $14,000 per student, per year on education, far above the national average of around $9,000. Are students in New York 50% smarter than the country in general? Hardly. Is the nation as a whole turning out well educated students? Sadly, no.

Our K-12 public schools are a government run monopoly. So what happens to a K-12 teacher if they fail to do their job? If they have been in the job long enough to get tenure, nothing. They will get a raise like everyone else. So what motivates them to turn out outstanding students? I’ll wait.

Let me be clear that I don’t want to lump all teachers together. They are many teachers who, by having what I suppose is a strong moral streak, do a great job because they want to teach. Okay, so let’s look at the teaching profession where there is a group that does their best because they get satisfaction from doing a good job. Now, some studies come out that say the way to improve results is smaller classroom size. The teachers’ unions get behind it and eventually push it through. So what does that mean? If you cut the size of the class in half, you double the number of classes. If you double the number of classes, you have to double the number of teachers and thus have to go deeper into the labor pool to find them. Before you took this step, we can probably assume that all the self-motivated teachers were already on the job. So the additional teachers are motivated by what?

Co -conspirators

That brings us back to the teachers’ unions. When government’s come under pressure to cut educational expenses, the airwaves are soon flooded with the heart wrenching commercials pleading to restore the funding “for the children’s sake.” What you don’t hear is the trailer that says, “This commercial paid for by the PTA,” or “This commercial paid for by the Association of Concerned Parents.” No, what you typically hear is, “This commercial paid for by the X Teacher’s union, Joe Blow, President.”

Who do the unions really represent…really? The students? or the teachers? They want the funds restored so that their membership is not hurt and their dues are not curtailed. If their true concern was for the students, why not support school vouchers and charter schools? They fight the former with a vengeance and the latter, if it is not union organized.

Let’s Not Pick on K-12 Education

Let’s look at other government areas. Government is the only area where union membership is growing. How many people relish going to their Department of Motor Vehicles? How efficient is the Post Office? Amtrak? Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have a bonus compensation plan, which is a step in the right direction unless it leads to cooking the books and making extremely risky loans that lead to the near collapse of our economy. How can we get this under control?

Controlling the Uncontrollable

Our government is trying to install a massive health care program that will cost a trillion dollars. At the same time, tens of billions of dollars are stolen from Medicare every year and they can’t stop it. Early this year, the Obama Administration passed a $787 billion stimulus package, spent $18 million to build a website to track it, and put Joe Biden in the role of watch dog. How is that working out? A recent report from ABC News, of all places, found that credit for creating jobs was given on the web site to Congressional Districts that do not exist. A $1,000 grant was purported to have created 50 jobs. The New York Times investigated and found that the $1,000 went to purchase a lawn mower. It took from the time of the founding of the Republic until about the mid 1990s to accumulate $6 trillion in debt. It has doubled since then, and it is projected to go from $12 trillion to $14 trillion by next year!

It cannot be controlled. It is impossible to control. The only solution is to cut the federal government down to size. Take out the Constitution and read what the true functions of government are supposed to be. The military, absolutely; the Post Office, yes it’s in there; coin money; establish patents and copyrights; establish the courts; control the District of Columbia; regulate interstate commerce; make treaties; give the State of the Union address. That pretty much sums it up and everything else should be left to the states and local government or the people.

We should jettison all the rest and cut this government down to size and get out of debt. Department of Labor–gone; Department of Health and Human Services–gone; Department ment of Housing and Urban Development–gone; Department of Transportation–gone; Department of Energy–gone; Depatrment of Education–gone; Department of Veterans Affairs–gone, rolled into the Department of Defense; Department of Homeland Security–gone, rolled into the Department of Defense; Department of the Interior–gone; Department of Agriculture–gone.

The amount of money saved would be enormous. Selling all the real estate and buildings would bring in more money. We could then cut taxes to jump start the economy and run a surplus to cut the debt. The next step would be to make it illegal for unions to organize government workers without a referendum approved by all the voters. Side benefits would be less campaign money because there would be less government to influence. Government would be more accountable to the people because it would be closer to the people, that is, at the state level or local level. We can do this proactively, or wait until the government is bankrupt and we have to sell off the parts to the Chinese.
