Who Inherited What?

Although it is getting very tiresome and it is losing it’s bite, Democrats still are desperately clinging to “we inherited eight years of Bush policies, yada, yada, yada.”  Was it eight years?  If so, how did he get re-elected in 2004?  I will be among the first to say that Bush wandered off the conservative reservation with his spending, but Bush didn’t create Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac either.

What Have We Inherited?

Let’s take a look at everything else we have inherited.  Why stop at Bush?

  • With 20% of the federal budget locked in to Social Security and this also being essentially a very large ponzi scheme for which we have enormous unfunded liabilities, who did we inherit this from?  Franklin Delano Roosevelt – Democrat.
  •  What about that other ticking time bomb, Medicare and Medicaid?  Thank you Lyndon Baines Johnson – Democrat.
  • Fannie Mae — Need I say more?  Franklin Delano Roosevelt – Democrat
  • Department of Agriculture – elevated to Cabinet level at a time when agricultural employment in this country was 70%-80% of the population.  In 2008 agricultural employment was about 2%-3% of the population.  Why do we still need it?  Thank you Grover Cleveland – Democrat
  • Department of Education – has spent $1 trillion since its founding and we all know how much it has improved education in this country.  Thank you Jimmy Carter – Democrat
  • Department of Energy – Remember the Synfuels project where we were going to convert coal to oil after the first Arab Oil Embargo?  It was a great idea as long as oil stayed above $40 per barrel at the time. Thank you Jimmy Carter – Democrat
  • Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – think of all the wildly successful urban development projects over the years, warehousing our poor in drug infested, dangerous housing projects.  Let’s not forget HUD’s contribution to the current financial meltdown where they aggressively pushed greater lending for homes in poor rural and urban areas.  Thank you Lyndon Baines Johnson – Democrat
  • Community Reinvestment Act — another key to the housing bubble, Thank you Jimmy Carter – Democrat:

Urged on by ACORN, congressional Democrats and the Clinton administration helped push tolerance for high-risk loans through every sector of the banking system — far beyond the sort of banks originally subject to the CRA. So it was the efforts of ACORN and its Democratic allies that first spread the subprime virus from the CRA to Fannie and Freddie and thence to the entire financial system. Soon, Democratic politicians and regulators actually began to take pride in lowered credit standards as a sign of ‘fairness’ — and the contagion spread.”

  • Department of Transportation – used to be part of the Department of Commerce. Split off to create another bureaucracy.  Thank you Lyndon Baines Johnson – Democrat

Gee, all of this we inherited from the pantheon of Democratic gods. It makes Bush sound like a piker.

Will We Never Learn?

When this country was founded Congress created three departments:  Department of War, the Department of State, and the Department of the Treasury.  That pretty much fits what the founders intended.  A limited federal government that would deal with external issues and defend us from our enemies.  There are now fifteen federal cabinet level agencies.  Why is it that Democrats feel this need to create massive new bureaucracies?  Why don’t they ever go away when they have achieved their mission?  We are now facing crushing deficits brought about by decades of government growth brought about by the Democrats.

It’s time to stop blaming Bush.  Mr. Obama, you wanted this job.  You won this job.  Now, do this job and stop bitching about what you inherited.  If anyone has something to bitch about it is we Americans, because you and your fellow travelers have built this house of cards and you think the only solution is to build it bigger, faster.  If the load is too heavy to carry, we don’t need vitamins (VAT tax) to get stronger, we need to lighten the load.  We have to shrink this beast down to a manageable size, NOW.

Bunning Throws a High Hard One

In baseball they call it a brush back pitch, a high hard one.  It lets the batter know that they don’t own home plate, and if they try to get too comfortable there they may be inviting a little “chin music.”  Jim Bunning, Republican Senator from Kentucky and a Hall of Fame baseball pitcher with a perfect game on his resume, just gave the Democrats a brush back and they don’t like it one bit.

Out of Control Spending

You would have to be Rip Van Winkle not to know that spending is out of control  and America is speeding toward bankruptcy.  President Obama and Nancy Pelosi have tried to hoodwink the country by implementing what is called “Paygo” short for Pay As You Go.  The idea is that you cannot spend money without first funding it either through cutting spending somewhere else or raising taxes.  The last element is the real reason Democrats support it, so that they would be “forced” to raise taxes.  Here is how the Wall Street Journal described Paygo back in June.

The truth is that paygo is the kind of budget gimmick that gives gimmickry a bad name. As Mr. Obama knows but won’t tell voters, paygo only applies to new or expanded entitlement programs, not to existing programs such as Medicare, this year growing at a 9.2% annual rate. Nor does paygo apply to discretionary spending, set to hit $1.4 trillion in fiscal 2010, or 40% of the budget.

The Democrats passed Paygo to appear fiscally responsible.  Jim Bunning merely called them on it.  He is not opposed to spending the money.  He has the courage, though, to stand up and say, Mr. President we’re broke, and we are accountable to the American people to be good stewards of the money they give us to run this government.

“If we can’t find $10 billion to pay for something that we all support, we will never pay for anything on the floor of this U.S. Senate,” he said. – Jim Bunning, Floor of the U.S. Senate, 3/1/2010

Immediately was heard much wailing an gnashing of teeth, that the lone Republican, had the temerity to challenge the “flexibility” of the Democrats to apply their rules willy nilly to tighten their grip on their power while trying to appear like the kindly nannies they really are.  Rules are passed to much fanfare in front of the cameras and then ignored with a scoff or a sneer, when they really mean something.

Gimmicks Instead of Guts

Democrats have proved incapable of controlling their spending.  With the mad push of profligacy that came with winning the Presidency and both houses of Congress with large margins, they now find themselves unable to dial it back without an intervention or a rehabilitation program.  So they pass Paygo, and ignore it; convene a debt reduction commission and name Andy Stern of the SEIU union to it.  If that is not a clue to what’s coming I don’t know what is.  What does a labor union president know about reducing debt?  All they know how to do is take someone else’s money and put it in their own pockets, so you can bet their solution to the debt problem is taxing you to the eyeballs.

Rather than the scorn that is being heaped upon him, Senator Bunning deserves our thanks.  Find the money first, then spend it.  Enough of the IOUs.  We cannot afford this liberal spending binge.

Stand strong, Senator, the Tea Party Patriots hear you and help is on the way.

Did Obama Lie?

WASHINGTON (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden said the Obama administration “misread how bad the economy was” but stands by its stimulus package and believes the plan will create more jobs as the pace of its spending picks up.

Does that mean Obama lied?  Biden lied?  Where’s the outrage?

There is none, which is how it should be.  But it is instructive to contrast this with what happened with President Bush.  Bush relied on intelligence from the CIA, the French, the British and others.  It all pointed in the same direction.  The information was shared with Congress and there was overwhelming bipartisan support authorizing the use of force in Iraq with 40% of Democrats voting in favor in the House and 58% in the Senate.  The senior members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, Republicans and Democrats saw the intelligence.  When it was later determined that weapons of mass destruction could not be found, the mantra was “Bush lied.”  The Democrats hid under their desks rather than refute that remark.

In the case of the stimulus, the projections of unemployment capping out at 8% rather than where it is today, prompting Biden’s mea culpa, was entirely within the control of the administration.  It wasn’t corroborated by other nations’ agencies.  In addition, every Republican in the House voted against it and all but three in the Senate.  So in which situation would there be a more credible charge of lying?

But unlike the Main Stream Media and the statists, I am reluctant accuse them of deliberately lying about their policies.  Perhaps, the aforementioned Main Stream Media and the statists will show some restraint in the future and return to the days of a spirited but honest debate on the issues?  I’m not holding my breath.

Fair and Balanced, Part II

by Bill O'Connell on January 12, 2009

A week from tomorrow, at noon, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States.  At the same moment, George W. Bush will become private citizen Bush, in another peaceful transition in government that is the envy of the world.

Today, President Bush held his last news conference and at it he said that when his term ends next week he will get off the stage, which creates an interesting dilemma.  What will the main stream media do now?

For the past two years their view of fair and balanced is to bash Bush, fair, and praise Obama, balanced.  No matter what the topic of the day, they always had Bush dressed and ready as the villain.  Any serious writer can tell you that for a good story you need conflict.  Who will be the new villain?  Sure, they’ll still be firing away at Bush as he rides off into the sunset, but eventually he will dip below the horizon, and they will have to find a new target.

I can’t imagine the White House press corps at a press conference just pitching softball after softball to Obama to hit out of the park.  The news outside the building will be real and it will not always be sunny.  You will have members of Congress who will try to hold hearings to round up anyone who ever served in the Bush administration and try to throw them in jail, but I don’t think Obama has the stomach for it. He has more important things to tend to.

The press has built the expectations for Obama so high, I truly feel sorry for the guy.  I think with his speech on the economy and that it will be a long hard slog, is at least partially an attempt to lower those expectations, but I believe the damage has been done.  The Democrats now hold both houses of Congress and the White House, who can they blame if they don’t start delivering on their promises and get the economy going again?  And how is the press going to handle it?

As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.  There is also an old Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times.”  It will be very interesting.
