At CPAC Marco Rubio showed some of the traits that make him a leading candidate for Vice President no matter who the Republican nominee happens to be. He mixed humor and personal narrative.

Rubio spoke with a degree of awe about arriving in the Senate. He wondered to himself, “How did I get here?” But after spending time in Harry Reid’s do-nothing Senate he looked around and wondered, “How did they get here?”

Getting more serious he talked about President Obama’s State of the Union address and how the president scrupulously avoided talking about his record. Why? Well, Rubio explained, for two years President Obama had a Democrat controlled House and a Democrat controlled Senate, which until the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy and the election of Republican Scott Brown to replace him, they had a filibuster-proof majority. So for two years he got everything he wanted and since then, everything has gotten worse.

So what did Obama say in the State of the Union address? He chose to pit Americans against each other. He is trying to sell the American people on a bill of goods that says we are a zero-sum society. That is, for someone to get ahead, someone has to get pulled down. But that is not true, but Obama needs us to believe it so that he can get people to vote for him.

Rubio then related to his own family saying that he felt his father and grandfather were better men than he, but Rubio has advanced as far as he has because he was born in the greatest country in the world.

He then made a telling point. He said that Republicans try to attract followers by arguing who is more like Ronald Reagan. Do you ever hear Democrats argue about who is more like Jimmy Carter?

What is government’s role, he asked? We should have an understandable tax code so that individuals and businesses can make decisions for business reasons not tax reasons. We need regulatory reform. Yes, we all want clean air and clean water but with sanity. We don’t have an energy policy, we have energy politics. While in office for three years President Obama had no plan for Medicare, but as soon as Republican Paul Ryan came up with a plan, he attacked it.

Summing up, Rubio said that President Obama seems to be a really good father; he seems to be a really good husband; but he is a terrible president. I couldn’t agree more.

While wiping his feet on the First Amendment by trying to force Catholic institutions to bend to his will and force them to provide services that go against their core beliefs, President Obama took time to lecture us on the Bible, and twist it to fit his reelection campaign. This outrage doesn’t get a pass.

The Bible Supports Obama’s Tax Plan

Obama tried to use the bible verse about from those who have been given much, much is expected, as a call from God to pay more taxes. To follow the Buffett Rule, if you will. Here is the verse from Luke 12:48:

When much has been given a man, much will be required of him.

But the context is in terms of doing the master’s will, not paying taxes. When it comes to paying taxes, Jesus was asked specifically about it. Here is that passage:

They sent some Pharisees and Herodians after him to catch him in his speech. The two groups came and said to him: “Teacher, we know you are a truthful man, unconcerned about anyone’s opinion. It is evident you do not act out of human respect but teach God’s way of life sincerely. Is it lawful to pay the tax to the emperor or not? Are we to pay or not to pay?” Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why are you trying to trip me up? Bring me a coin and let me see it.” When they brought one, he said to them, “Whose head is this and whose inscription is it?” “Caesar’s,” they told him. At that Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar’s what is Caesar’s, but give to God what is God’s.” Their amazement at him knew no bounds – Mark 12:1-17

When asked specifically about taxes Jesus dismissed them, seeing the political trap. Jesus didn’t say let’s go to Rome and lobby for the least of our brothers. He didn’t say, you know, we need a new government program. He didn’t tell of the Good Samaritan, calling his Roman Senator to pass a new law to provide free health care for victims of highway robbery found laying in a ditch. He said we should take care of such things ourselves, not pass the buck to someone else. So instead of asking the rich like Romney to pay more in taxes, ask Joe Biden how much he gives of the public’s money, that he has been living off most of his adult life, to charity. See if Obama wants to brag about so-called Catholic Biden, giving an average of $1 a day to charity while pulling down a tidy six figure income. Since 2010, Romney gave $7 million to charity. What about the Obamas? Barack Obama and his wife Michelle gave $10,772 of the $1.2 million they earned from 2000 through 2004 to charities, or less than 1 percent. As former Louisiana Senator Russell Long famously said, “Don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax that fellow behind the tree.” It is hypocrisy at its boldest. But then this president has never been shy.

Wasted Gifts

What should be embarrassing to Obama is that the passage he used really refers to him. Who has been given more than Obama? He grew up in Hawaii, he got an Ivy League education, he has drawn a salary from the public trough as an Illinois state senator, a U.S. Senator, and President of the United States. What has he done with these gifts? We know he has played golf over ninety times, he has taken long vacations, he plays basketball every week, and rather than meeting with members of Congress he stonewalled them and then blames them for the state we are in. Let’s take the passage from Luke that Obama quoted and back it up a few verses:

The Lord said, “Who in your opinion is that faithful, farsighted steward whom the master will set over his servants to dispense their ration of grain in season? That servant is fortunate whom his master finds busy when he returns.”

It is not the rich who according to Obama do not pay enough taxes that the Bible refers to, but him, who was given bountiful gifts from God but squandered them. What would Jesus say to Illinois Senator Obama who opposed legislation that if a woman went to a hospital to have an abortion and if the child was actually born alive, the surviving child should be given all necessary medical care? Is that caring for the least of his brothers? Is that emulating the Good Samaritan? Is there no level to which Obama will not stoop to get himself reelected? America has had enough of this president. America deserves better.

It’s time for Romney and Gingrich to step up their games with the fall in mind and stop slinging mud at each other. I’ll give Santorum and Paul a pass at this point as although they are trailing far behind, they are trying to stay on the high road and true to their beliefs.

Tips for Mitt

It’s time to give up the ghost on RomneyCare. Okay, you were a govenor and states are sovereign and it looked like a good idea at the time. But your efforts to defend RomneyCare while attacking ObamaCare is one of the reasons that many conservatives don’t trust you. ObamaCare is largely resonsible for the birth of the Tea Party, the only birth that conservatives want associated with ObamaCare and Obama probably wishes it was an abortion instead. I think many conservatives would accept you saying, it appeared workable, no one had tried it before, states should be a laboratory for differnt approaches to governing, but this idea really didn’t work, and regardless of whether it worked or not, healthcare is not the constitutional responsiblity of the federal government. Then forcefully reitereate that you will end ObamaCare.

Everyone knows that politics is not beanbag. It is a full contact sport, but just be careful with taking things out of context to twist their meaning. There should be enough differences between you and Gingrich, to present your plans and let the people decide. Keep it clean, no hitting below the belt.

Tips for Newt

It’s time to put on your big boy pants. If you think Romney is tough, wait until you get in the ring with Obama. He will have no compunction about lying about your record. If your excuse for not doing as well in the last two debates is that you never stood next to someone on the same stage who lied about your record, you have a rude awakening coming. If most of your supporters are salavating to see you debate Obama and this is all it takes to knock you off your debating game, throw in the towel now, please!

You need to come clean on what you did for Freddie Mac. Obama is still blaming the economy on the Bush years and the terrible mess he was handed, the center of which was the housing meltdown. If you don’t put on the table exactly what your role was and what you were paid to do, Obama will have a field day saying, “For the past four years we have been trying to recover from the housing crisis, and do you really want to put someone in the White House who caused it? De we really want to go back there?” Newt, you have to get this out now and put it behind you if he can.

It’s Obama and the Economy, Stupid

If we don’t get Obama out of the White House, ObamaCare will be permanant. If you thought Obama had socialist leanings before, imagine what they will be if he no longer has to face the electorate? If the past three years haven’t been painful enough, what will happen with a Republican Congress and an Obama presidency? Obama will try to run on a “do-nothing” Congress this fall but that’s a tough sell with the Democrats in Control of the Senate, but if the Republicans take both chambers and Obama stonwalls for two years, he can make that argument in 2014, “It’s a Republican Congess and we are stonewalled. I need a Democratic Congress to work with.” We may see a reverse landslide to 2010. Let us not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. This should be an easy election to win, if we don’t screw it up ourselves.

Throughout out the Republican campaign process, Herman Cain has been portrayed as an interesting candidate, but with no serious chance of winning the Republican nomination. What I found was the most curious logic was on the O’Reilly Factor the other night. Bill’s reasoning that Herman Cain won’t win the nomination was because the most important thing to Republicans was to unseat Obama and that independents won’t vote for Cain because he is too conservative.

A 2010 Gallup Poll showed that about 42% of Americans described themselves as conservative, 20% as liberal and about 35% moderate. So, if Herman Cain were to win the Republican nomination, independents would not vote for him because he is too conservative, but where does that lead? It would lead you to the conclusion that they would vote for Barack Obama instead and where, exactly, does he fall on the political spectrum? No American president is or was further left on the political spectrum than Barack Obama. So given a choice between a strong conservative candidate and a strong liberal candidate we are supposed to believe that, naturally, moderates are going to vote for the far left guy. If you check your math, a conservative in America today only has to hold his base and grab 25% of the moderates to win. A progressive candidate has to hold his base and grab 75% of the moderates to win.

But Republicans keep falling into the trap that O’Reilly is claiming. We say, uh oh, a conservative can’t win because the main stream media tells us that, so we go wobbly and pick someone who appeals to the moderates. What we end up with is a liberal (the Democrat) and liberal light (the moderate Republican) and we get our clocks cleaned (see John McCain).

I would have no problem seeing Herman Cain on the debate platform facing off against Barack Obama. In these troubled times, who better than someone who has actually turned around two companies (Burger King in Philadelphia and Godfather’s pizza). He learned the Burger King business by going through the company’s training “boot camp” where he actually worked at the grill. What has Barack Obama ever worked at in the private sector? Herman Cain can give an inspirational talk for 30-45 minutes without a teleprompter. I don’t know about you but I felt pretty embarrassed to listen to the master communicator, Barack Obama, stop in the middle of a speech to tell the teleprompter operator to move the speech up a few lines. Barack Obama thinks he’s the Wizard of Oz, but he should turn around to see that the curtain has fallen to the floor.

Another knock on Cain was his lack of knowledge about foreign policy. How much did Bill Clinton know about national defense, other than how to dodge the draft, before he was elected president? How much did Barack Obama know about anything before he was elected? They are not the same in their experiences. The presidency is an executive position, and what counts is executive experience. Governors have it, generals have it, CEOs have it; legislators do not. What a legislator decides to do carries no weight unless he can get a large number of fellow legislators to agree and go along with him. Everything an executive decides to do has an impact, some large, some small but an impact nonetheless.

We are in the mess we are in because Obama didn’t understand that coming into office and he has yet to learn it. His signature program, ObamaCare, was just thrown over the wall to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to finish the details and when it was done it was an abomination. When in doubt, Obama goes into campaign mode. Herman Cain comes up with solutions. They may not be perfect, they may undergo some changes, but they are serious solutions to real problems, not just another transfer the wealth program.

Herman Cain deserves a serious look for who he is, what he stands for, and what he has accomplished. Don’t write him off because some political pundits think they know the formula for winning. If you don’t believe me, ask Marco Rubio, or Rand Paul, or Bob Turner, or Mike Lee.

To no one’s surprise, President Obama followed his lame first attempt at a budget with the same tired class warfare “taxing the rich is the solution plan”. The problem is spending. This problem is not going to get fixed until we: a) stop spending more; b) start spending less; and c) spend less than we take in until the debt is paid off. Yes, I said paid off. We are the wealthiest country on earth. We should be able to live within our means and not have to borrow to keep a bloated, inefficient, unaccountable government in Washington growing and growing.

Let’s take a look at the facts. The following three charts show how much of Adjusted Gross Income is earned by the most productive 1%, 5%, and 10% (the blue bars) and what share of total income taxes they pay (the red bars). This is over a twenty year period:

Share of Income vs Share of Tax Burden of Most Productive 1 Percent

Share of Income vs Share of Tax Burden

Share of Income vs Share of Tax Burden of Most Productive 10%

What is clear from all three of these graphs is that over the past twenty years if you look at the trend lines, while the most productive amoung us produced more, the share of the tax load they paid grew even faster. So let’s stop the sleight of hand about how many dollars the changes in tax law affect Mr. Obama personally and let’s be clear, to use Mr. Obama’s favorite phrase, there was no tax cut voted in December, the vote just maintained the status quo. So, Mr. President, level with the American people. Just what percentage of total income taxes do you want the most productive 10% of Americans to carry? Since you feel 70%, the amount they carry today, is not enough, what do you think is fair? 80%? 90%? 100%? Should the most productive 10% of Americans pay all of the income taxes while the other 90% pay none? Stop dancing around and be straight with the American people and tell us how much of the total pie is fair for the most productive to pay?

But we don’t have enough revenue because of the Bush tax cuts, you say. Okay, let’s put that one to rest as well.

Federal Government Revenue over Time

It is clear that the tax revenue collected hit its peak after the Bush tax cuts. They fell off after the start of the recession, which is expected, but it appears they bottomed in 2010 and the Bush rates were extended (not increased, not decreased). It’s the spending, stupid!

Trying to raise more money through raising tax rates runs into Hauser’s Law. As I explain in Liberty’s Lifeline, W. Kurt Hauser looked at eighty years of revenue data and concluded that tax revenues will not exceed 20% of GDP no matter how high the rates. If spending continues at 24% of GDP where it is now, we will be digging a hole out of which we will never escape. It’s the spending, stupid!

Instead of leading, President Obama, came out yesterday with Budget 2.0, and basically made a campaign speech instead of a serious policy statement demonstrating leadership. Here is Charles Krauthammer’s analysis:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR0E3trOF-k

President Obama ran for office with the promise of bipartanship. He promised to change the tone in Washington. He has not even been able to change his role from campaigner-in-chief to chief executive and instead has become punter-in-chief. He punted his responsibility to put together a budget to a bipartisan commission. He didn’t like the yucky medicine his commission offered up and so he dismissed their recommendation. He now talks of a new bipartisan commission.

He also likes to follow the instructions of his mentor Saul Alinsky, “pick a target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.” He did it to the members of the Supreme Court in his State of the Union address after the Citizens United v FEC decision by calling them out as they sat immobile in front of him. He repeated it yesterday by inviting Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders to this speech and then attacked them.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JjGGnwe6UQ

When I started writing this blog in 2008 it was primarily because I saw the candidate Obama as someone with no executive experience, a few years in the Illinios senate where he voted mostly present, less than a full term as a U.S. Senator before he bailed out to run for president, and the author of a couple of books and I was stunned that people across America actually believed this man, who may be great guy to have a beer with or play a game of basketball or golf, could actually handle the job. Well, as another of his mentors, Reverand Wright, once said, our chickens are coming home to roost. I would much rather have Jimmy Carter sitting in the Oval Office today than this man, and that’s saying something.

It’s about the spending, Mr. President, and if you don’t understand that, wake up Joe Biden and give him a turn at the wheel. It’s time to take your responsibility seriously and make some tough decisions. Right now 2012 is a pipe dream for you.

As indicated in a previous post, President Obama’s reelection effort depended on him walking a tightrope that required him to stem the hemorrhage of independent supporters while keeping the livid left on his side. His State of the Union address showed him confidently stepping out on the high wire, with lofty language extolling the virtues of America. But by the end of the speech it looked like the aerialist was leaning to one side, sticking his leg out on the other as a counterbalance while starting to pinwheel his arms backwards to avert a fall.

What Will Republicans Do?

The question is will Republicans sacrifice themselves, diving beneath the plunging president to break his fall? Or will they stand aside, avert their eyes to the catastrophe and then carry on to clean up the mess? To achieve the former, they need only to overreach and get in a toe to toe battle with the president and do something reminiscent of the 1990s and shut down the government. Bill Clinton turned that event to his advantage and cruised to reelection. To do the latter, Republicans should methodically pass legislation that will cut appropriate parts of the government, reform taxes, repeal ObamaCare, revamp legislation and let the Democrats in the Senate and President Obama go on record, item by item, as being against it. Limit the collateral damage of a government shutdown that the left can portray as cruel and hang every objection to responsible government around their neck to display again and again in 2012.

Real Education

Much was said about education, but the real education is not about schools. It is about an education strategy to inform the American people. With the Tea Party and the new media it is vital to explain conservative positions to the American people, ideas that often don’t fit into thirty second sound bites. If the task of educating the American people on conservative principles begins in the fall of 2012, we have lost the argument. The real education begins now. Professor Paul Ryan made the opening argument to the president in the Republican response. We need to obliterate the stock argument of the left that being against the Department of Education is not to be against education. That fixing Social Security is not cutting or ending retirement benefits but making them the personal property of the individual, not a stipend of the federal government that is completely within the government’s control and not our own.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA4H88lk0Yk

We are not going to gain long term prosperity by wagering on white elephants like high speed rail, having the government decide that solar shingles is an industry that should succeed. Let the market decide, which really means let us decide as we vote hundreds of times each day on what products meet our needs, rather than voting once every two years, only to be shooed away by the statists, who think they are the smartest people in the world. We need a federal government to only do those things that are not effective for us to do ourselves, such as national defense, and not tell us what to buy and sell (health insurance, electric cars), what to make in our factories (light bulbs), or what to eat.

Just as the Republicans are requiring that all legislation must indicate where in the Constitution the bill is justified, we must explain to the American people what each bill does and why it should be enacted. If we follow these steps, we can continue on the road to recovery and this president can either get on board, or start writing the memoirs of his single term.

That’s my opinion; I’d like to know yours. Please comment below.

On the surface, President Obama’s State of the Union address was like many others, long on platitudes, short on substance. I had the opportunity to witness it at the studio of WNYC in New York. We were a handful of Tea Party members is a sea of progressives.

Education

The president talked of many things that were, constitutionally, not his nor the federal government’s responsibility. He spoke of having to strengthen education. Before my progressive friends leap out of their chairs let me point out that being against the federal government’s involvement in education, is not to be opposed to education. We have had a Department of Education since the Carter administration, spent over one trillion dollars, and our educational performance has declined. The stock progressive answer to such failures is that the program either wasn’t big enough, or that we should imagine how bad things would be without the effort, neither of which is provable.

We should eliminate the Department of Education. During the speech, folks in the studio tweeted their thoughts and they were projected on a large screen. One of my favorites was, “Mixed msg for teachers: will recruit you & celebrate you as nation-builders while making it easier to fire you.” Who would want to fire a competent teacher? Anyone? At the same time, who would not want to fire an incompetent teacher? How does retaining an incompetent teacher improve our education? We should eliminate teachers’ unions. I know of no professional that does not stand on his own merits and make the case for their value to the organization and their compensation. Teachers tell us repeatedly that they are professionals, but they need the protection of an unskilled laborer pushing boxes in a warehouse, or they won’t be treated fairly. I’m all for paying good teachers as much as the market will bear. I am against paying teachers because they carry a union card and will disrupt the education of our children if they are not bought off.

High Speed Rail

The president wants 80% of Americans to have access to high speed rail. Why? Why, even if we could, would we pay for this? Think about it. A car can travel in any direction you point it. A plane can travel in any direction you point it. A train can only go where some very expensive tracks are laid and if conditions change you can’t re-route it without tremendous expense. Yes, high speed trains are much faster than cars, but when you add in the time to get from your home to the train and from the termination point to your ultimate destination, the speed advantage falters. Add to that the inflexibility of adhering to a train schedule, and the advantage is lost to all but the most densely populated areas of the country, like the Northeast corridor. This will be the white elephant of white elephants.

ObamaCare

Obama cracked his Cheshire Cat grin and joked about some folks not being satisfied with ObamaCare. He said he was open to suggestions on how to improve it. Why wasn’t he open to ideas when it was crafted? Congress passes this two thousand page abomination and now he invites us to tinker with it. A tweak here, a twist there, and it will be terrific. Throw it out wholesale, and implement some simple market based solutions: Tort reform, buying policies across state lines, eliminate third party payer, high deductable plans with Health Savings Accounts, employees owning policies rather than companies. Let’s find common ground on how to deal with pre-existing conditions and the issue of dropping coverage for people who get sick. That will not take two thousand pages to do so.

Spending Cuts

After a spending binge under both Bush and Obama, capping spending is negligence. As Senator Jim DeMint said, “When a car speeds toward a cliff, you hit the brake, not cruise control.” We have about four hundred thousand federal employees that make over $100,000 per year. We need to cut, cut, cut.

Taxes

Watching the speech in the bastion of liberalism, it still baffles me how they view taxes. This was not a crowd of homeless people. When Obama talked about taxing the wealthiest, the room exploded in cheers and applause. Consider two things. One, New York is heavily dependent on those very wealthy people who work on Wall Street to pick up most of the tax burden, and they do. They are also very mobile and do not have to choose to remain in New York, if New York becomes hostile, taxwise. Two, compared to the rest of the country, we are rich. Which means we pay a greater share of the federal burden of taxes and yet our heavily Democratic Congressional delegation keeps voting for a bigger and bigger federal government and we get the bill but a small portion of the benefit. The light bulb recently illuminated over the head of Congressman Steve Israel, when he wondered why we don’t get back as much money from the federal government as we send to it. As comedian Ron White likes to say, “You can’t fix stupid.”

Cato Takes it Apart

The Cato Institute produced this excellent video taking apart the State of the Union, piece by piece. It’s worth a watch.

With less than three weeks until the 2010 mid-term elections, it seems that Barack Obama and the Democrats are throwing whatever then can think of against the wall to see if it sticks. The latest is that the big, bad, U.S. Chamber of Commerce is channeling foreign money into Republican campaigns. Yes, our freedom (an odd term to be used by statists) is being sold to foreign governments. If you don’t believe me, watch the clip.

The talking points have been established that it was eight years, eight, of failed Bush and/or Republican policies that got us into this mess and President Obama and the Democrats are working hard to get us out of it. Let’s take a closer look.

What blew up in 2008? It was the housing market. The underlying cause of the problem has Democrat/liberal/progressive fingerprints all over it going back to Franklin Roosevelt who created Fannie Mae. Add into that mix Lyndon Johnson privatizing Fannie Mae to hide it from the budget and creating HUD; Jimmy Carter creating the Community Reinvestment Act; Bill Clinton pushing for more home ownership among those who could least afford it, Andrew Cuomo as HUD Secretary pushing Fannie and Freddie to take on riskier mortgages; Barney Frank and Chris Dodd fighting against regulation before they were fighting for it (and where have we heard that formulation before?); and when housing prices run out of gas and the house of cards that the Democrats built collapses, it’s all Bush’s fault.

Let’s look at the timeline. When he took office, President Bush was handed a recession from Bill Clinton resulting from the dot.com bubble. In less than a year we had 9/11. In spite of that, Bush pushed through tax cuts and got the economy to grow through most of his presidency. The Democrats took control of Congress in January 2007 and in December 2007 the economy went into recession. One year later Barack Obama is elected President of the United States. Now, more than a year and a half after Obama is in office the economy looks like it is slipping into a double dip recession, and this is the Republican’s fault? Who has been spending like a drunken sailor? Who wasted almost $1 trillion on a stimulus plan that was so ineffective the Obama administration had to invent a new statistic, “jobs saved”, to hide its dismal performance. They add on ObamaCare, which no one in Congress read before voting on it and no one knows what is in it and so no small business is going to hire anyone until they know what it costs. How is that the Republican’s fault or Bush’s?

We are just a few months away from the tax cuts put in place by President Bush expiring. President Obama wants them to expire. This will place an additional massive burden on small businesses and just about everyone else and he wonders why aren’t companies hiring? The man came into office with no executive experience and the year and a half he has been in office he hasn’t seemed to pick up any. Could it be because he is surrounded by advisors who have little to no executive experience themselves?

To my fellow Americans I say, hang in there it is less than 100 days to vote the bums out. Perhaps not all of them, but at least we can bring in some adult supervision. It’s time to stop steamrolling the American people with the socialist programs and to let “We the People” take back our government.
