Republican Party

Tim Bishop is in a tough spot. He can’t rely on earmarks to get himself reelected, those have been banned. He has a reputation of strong constituent service but if you peel back that onion you will see that the service is based on helping folks deal with the massive regulatory programs he typically votes for. Run on his record? His record consists of voting with Nancy Pelosi 97% of the time; in return the leadership gave him his share of pork to pass around and “buy” votes.

The Democrats are banking on the American people returning to the days of voting by sound bite. They believe the Tea Party is an anomaly that will go down as a blip in the history books, rather than a force for educating the electorate on the issues. It is a strategy that has worked for them, even as recently as the 2010 election. In the First Congressional District of New York, Congressman Tim Bishop ran for reelection entirely on bashing his opponent, and not mentioning his record of voting with Nancy Pelosi 97% of the time.

Stop Me Before I Spend!

by Bill O'Connell on May 10, 2011

It cries out for an intervention. It is almost like a 1950s horror movie where the victim/villain begs for help to stop him before he runs amok and kills again. With a monstrous $14 trillion in debt and Democrats and Republicans about to do battle to increase that amount even more, newly elected Republican governor Rick Scott of Florida turns down white elephant spending on high speed rail, $2 billion worth. But instead of agreeing that Governor Scott’s decision was a prudent one in today’s times, Democrats Chuck Schumer and Frank Lautenberg waddle up to the trough, snorting in glee as they bury their faces in the slop and with the excess dripping off their chins, look into the camera and say, bad for Florida, goooooood for New York and New Jersey.

Boehner 1 – Teacher’s Union 0

Score one for Mr. Boehner. He has been getting lambasted by conservatives for being had on the 2011 budget deal he negotiated. But if you dig a little deeper you can find a nugget of gold.

Send in the Clowns

by Bill O'Connell on April 8, 2011

Today we find out if the politicians in Washington can avoid a government shutdown. The morning line, is “not likely.” Let’s put this in context. For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth this will end up being about whether the gaping hole in the current budget is closer to a staggering $1.6 trillion or a mere eyepopping $1.5 trillion.

It was fun to watch the news yesterday whenever a Democrat was on and was asked, “Why didn’t you pass a budget when you had both houses of Congress and the White House?” After some feet shifting, the answers ranged from, “Well a budget is only a piece of paper it doesn’t commit to anything,” to, “That’s in the past and there’s nothing we can do about that now.” In other words we should move on.org I am disaappointed that the anchors didn’t follow up with, “You could have also passed all the appropriations bills for the remainder of the fiscal year, which would have taken this entire discussion off the table.” But it would have also shown what reckless spenders the Democrats were, right before the election which would have made their bloodbath even worse.

So now you can expect a heavy dose of heavy breathing, name calling, and Democratic righteous indignation captured on C-SPAN. (How quickly they can switch roles). But through it all, I want you to try a little mind exercise that will make everything crystal clear. You are hearing more and more venom coming out against the Tea Party, you know, that group of insignificant, Astroturf, (insert crude sexual reference here), overhyped, fading away, people who don’t matter any more, except to be a scapegoat for the left. Here’s the exercise: whenever you hear a Democrat or other statist say “Tea Party”, subsitute the word “People” and the meaning will be clear. “The People have hijacked the Republican Party.” “Boehner is being held hostage  and prodded to make extreme cuts by the People.” You see, People, the statists are deathly afraid of the sleeping giant that has been awakened. They don’t like an electorate that pays attention. The electorate that they like is kept sedated with earmarks, told what to do and when to do it by the unions and community organizers, and dutifully pull the lever for them, and then go back to wherever the hell they came from.

They don’t like being outnumbered by millions who know the Constitution better than they do and will extract a price if they don’t do their jobs.

Maybe it’s just me. Perhaps not having lived in the rarefied air of academia or politics, I have a more roll up the sleeves, get some dirt under the fingernails approach to what a job entails. Today it seems that politicians like to get in front of the cameras, fire off a sound bite and then go do something more interesting.

The New Welfare Recipients Are Politicians

by Bill O'Connell on March 30, 2011

The new model of public service that we are being sold from Democrats and progressives is to get elected and then do nothing and stop anyone who tries to actually serve those who elected them. Shall we call it a politician subsidy or welfare, where we pay them to do nothing?

Introducing the 2012 Senate Scorecard

by Bill O'Connell on March 24, 2011

The most popular post at Liberty’s Lifeline since it was first penned on November 4, 2010 is titled, Next Up, the Senate Class of 2012. In watching the continued interest in who is up for election in the Senate in 2012, Liberty’s Lifeline has decided to introduce the 2012 Senate Scorecard.

The purpose of the Senate Scorecard is to provide a convenient reference for informing citizens on what these senators stand for. The scorecard which can be accessed through the “Scorecard” page tab up top or by linking here, shows how the senators, who will be facing the voters in November of 2012, voted on major pieces of legislation.

The senators will be listed in the left column grouped by Democrats, Independents, and then Republicans. If their name is in a normal font, they are standing for reelection; if in bold, they have announced their retirement; and if italicized, they already have an announced primary challenger. The headings of the other columns indicate the name of a particular piece of legislation and below, how that particular senator voted on that legislation.

Liberty’s Lifeline hopes this will help our fellow citizens make an informed decision on which candidates to support or challenge.

The Battle of Wisconsin

by Bill O'Connell on February 20, 2011

It seemed an unlikely place. But then so was Gettysburg. If you asked anyone at about the time the Tea Party started if Wisconsin would be a major battleground, I don’t think they would have agreed. But in the last few days, a new Republican governor has taken on the public unions and they have fought back with a vengeance. It is a battle they can little afford to lose.
